What is Infant Reflux?

There are a number of forms of infant reflux. The predominant mechanism is an underdeveloped sphincter muscle. This means that the sphincter muscle connecting the stomach and esophagus either remains open allowing contents back up the esophagus or remains tightly closed preventing contents from entering the stomach. Both cause regurgitation. You are able to discern which has occurred in your infant by observing the contents of your baby’s spit up. A normal sphincter muscle would usually remain tightly closed until your baby swallows. Other forms of reflux include the sphincter connecting the stomach and intestines. Your infant may have more than one form of reflux.
